This study explored the wood properties of Populus "androscoggin" (Populus trichocarpa X Populus maximowiczii) grown in a river bed plantation near Timaru. The objectives of this study were: (1) to determine some general characteristics of the tree viz. diameter over bark, diameter under bark, bark thickness, eccentricity and the diameter of heartwood. (2) to improve the quality of sawn timber by drying the timber so as to reduce the effect of tension wood and growth stresses in poplar.
